London, 28 April 2021 – The 30% Club has partnered with Inclusion Labs' Decade of Diversity Initiative to advance diversity and inclusion on school boards of governors. School boards can be an idividual's first step towards a seat on a corporate board.

Inclusion Labs, a purpose driven non-profit company, today announces the launch of the Decade of Diversity initiative which will see schools, organisations and individuals commit to up to two pledges that help to advance diversity and inclusion in schools across the UK.

These are:

1.     to ensure 25% Diverse Literature in schools by 2030

2.     to ensure Diverse Governing Boards in schools by 2030

The initiative, which has been backed by 30 cross-industry organisations and individuals, was designed to coordinate commitments to embed diversity, equity and inclusion in schools and to accelerate the bold aims and outcomes of each pledge through action over the next 10 years.

The lack of diverse literature and leadership are decades-long issues both within the education sector and across other industries. The progress required to shift the needle is an urgent one and it cannot be achieved in silo. No one individual or institution can carry this responsibility, it requires an all-hands-on deck approach, with various partners doing their bit, regardless of how large or small.

“Navigating issues of diversity and inclusion in schools can be overwhelming and not just for the students and their families, but also for schools – I know this first-hand as a parent and across my work with Inclusion Labs. Through the Decade of Diversity initiative, I’m bringing together schools, organisations and individuals who are passionate and committed to take actions towards building diverse and inclusive environments for all young people whatever their identities or background,” said Temi Akindele Barker, Founder of Inclusion Labs.

“In our schools, the books we read should tell our students it is okay to love themselves and to love others. They should affirm all identities and celebrate all aspects of individuality and diversity. We have to ensure that the people making decisions about our schools reflect the communities they serve, as well as our wider society. By giving voice to all groups, we ensure that barriers are addressed and challenged. Furthermore, all young people deserve to see people like them in leadership positions, emphasising their value and protection as well as raising their aspirations,” says Temi Akindele Barker.

Ann Cairns, 30% Club global chair and executive vice chair of Mastercard, said: "The 30% Club is proud to be a strategic partner of Inclusion Labs and joining the steering committee of this fantastic initiative to make sure school governor boards become more representative of the communities they serve. Diversity of thought and leadership bring about better outcomes for all."

Hannah Stolton, CEO for Governors for Schools, added: “Governors for Schools promote the importance of diversity on boards, because of the numerous benefits it brings to the schools served. We are delighted to be partnering with Inclusion Labs to expand our work with schools and volunteers in this area, bringing volunteering opportunities to those who may not otherwise consider the role.”
