On March 22, 2017 Borsa Istanbul (BIST) hosted the launch of the 30% Club’s Turkey Chapter as a business led campaign, aimed at improving corporate boards’ gender diversity. The founding members of the 30% Club Turkey represent most of Turkey’s powerful business groups that collectively dominate the stock market.

The 30% Club in Turkey is a spin off from the Independent Women Directors Project, that was initated by Sabancı University’s Corporate Governance Forum when the Capital Markets Board of Turkey amended its Corporate Governance Guidelines in 2012, recommending that companies set a target level of no less than 25% women on their boards. The Forum, which maintains a database of female talent and tracks improvement in BIST boards’ gender diversity, facilitates and coordinates the 30% Club Turkey campaign.

The Steering Commitee of the 30% Club Turkey has the following targets:

  • 30% participation of women in the boards of BIST Star Market and Main Market companies by 2025 (representing an increase of 109% from 14.3% in 2016)
  • 30% women in the top executive team (representing an increase of 100% from 15% in 2016)
  • Zero all male boards in BIST 100 compaines by 2025 (targeting 38 companies with all male boards as of 2016) ,

These targets corresponds to approximately a three-fold increase in the number of professional women on corporate boards from the current level considering that half of the women sitting on corparate boards today are members of controlling shareholder families.

    7th Women Directors in Turkey Conference organized by Sabanci University Corporate Governance Forum on November 20, 2019. The conference was held at Zorlu PSM under the sponsorship of Garanti BBVA, IFC, Limak Holding and Zorlu Holding. This year the conference held under the "Nomination Process for the Board of Directors and Diversity" theme and the results of the "Women on Board 2019 Turkey" report were shared with the public.

    The opening speech of the conference made by IFC Country Manager of Turkey, Arnaud Dupoizat. 30 Percent Club Campaign Global Steering Committee Member, Sarah Morris made the keynote speech in the conference. Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum Director Melsa Ararat presented the "Women on Board 2019 Turkey" report.

    The "Board Membership Nomination Processes Search Conference" was held on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Boyner Holding as part of the 30% Club Campaign conducted by the Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum. The moderator of the event was Sabancı University Search Chair Oğuz Babüroğlu.

    Attending were 25 independent woman directors who hold positions on the boards of publicly-traded companies in different sectors.

    Boyner Holding Vice President of Human Resources Emek Yurdanur delivered introductory remarks. Yurdanur said, “We at Boyner Holding support every initiative for equal opportunity. I am a firm supporter of equal opportunity in our own companies as well. Forty percent of our employees are women. It is a challenge to find and retain woman employees in the retail sector. That is why we have positive promotion and wage prospects and offer equality of opportunity."

    Melsa Ararat said Nomination Committees were non-functional

    Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum Director Melsa Ararat said that the event was the continuation of the previous search conference. Ararat explained that the 2018 conference was held with members of company boards that consisted solely of men, and the outcomes were shared with the public in the 2018 Independent Woman Directors Conference. 

    Melsa Ararat said that the number of woman directors was not improving at the expected rate, continuing, “The inclusion of more independent woman directors on boards will ensure that companies are managed with consideration for the interests of various stakeholders, but the rate og improvement in Turkey is too slow. We decided to work on the matter of nomination since we have observed that non-functional nomination committees are a critical obstacle."

    Ararat said that the outputs of the meeting would provide input to the EBRD project on increasing the ratio of woman directors on company boards. Ararat further explained that the 30% Club, under the direction of the Forum, is part of the project.

    Oğuz Babüroğlu said that the focus points of the meeting would be the appointment process and experiences during board membership.

    6th Women Directors in Turkey Conference organized by Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum on November 27, 2018, Tuesday. The conference was held under the title of “Transformation on Corporate Boards and Business” at Zorlu Holding with the sponsorship of Zorlu PSM.

    “Women on Board 2018 Turkey” report presented at the conference. The “Women Empowered Boards” awards were presented to the winners. Doğuş Otomotiv, Ford Automotive, Tat Gıda, TAV Airports Holding and Tekfen Holding were awarded companies.

    A special meeting was held at Zorlu PSM on Wednesday, March 6, 2018 for International Working Women's Day by cooperation between 30 Percent Club which implemented in Turkey by Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum and Zorlu Holding which is one of the founding member of 30 Percent Club.

    Zorlu Holding board member Selen Zorlu Melik made the opening speech at the event, which was attended by Zorlu employees as well as employees of the 30 Percent Club Turkey member companies. In the event, country chair of 30 Percent Club Turkey, CEO of Akkök Holding, Ahmet Cemal Dördüncü also made a speech.

    The 5th Conference on Woman Directors in Turkey held by the Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum and hosted by Zorlu Holding took place at Zorlu Performing Arts Center on Thursday, February 15, 2018.

    The opening speech of the event was made by IFC ECA Senior Manager Jasper Kjaer. The Woman Directors in Turkey 2017 Report and the outcomes of the imposition of a legal quota were discussed in an international panel session, followed by the 2017 Boards Empowered by Women Awards. 

    The recipient of the Boards Empowered by Women Award was TAT Gıda Sanayi A.Ş., while the Business Group with the Most Boards Empowered by Women Award went to Akkök Group.

    The progress achieved by the 30% Club Turkey, founded with the support of the Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum, was shared with the press and companies. The outcomes of the Roundtable held with all-men Executive Boards in October were discussed, and five leading executive search companies signed a joint code of conduct. 

    The voluntary code of conduct encourages the leading executive search companies active in Turkey to support the decision-makers of their clients in understanding and embracing the added value brought by gender diversity in executive boards and executive management.
