The 30% Club Ireland officially launched in January 2015, with a goal to achieve better gender balance at all levels in leading Irish businesses. The 30% Club believes that gender balance on boards and executive leadership not only encourages better leadership and governance, but further contributes to better all-round board performance, and ultimately increased corporate performance for both companies and their shareholders. The initiative is complementary to individual company efforts and existing networking groups, adding to these through collaboration and the visible commitment of senior business leaders. Over 200 Irish Chairs and CEOs of leading businesses are supporters of the 30% Club Ireland. These leaders are committed to accelerating gender balance in their organisations through voluntary actions.
The 30% Club is a collaborative business-led effort to make real change in Ireland, aiming towards 30% female representation in senior management by 2020.

The third pillar of the 30% Club Strategy focuses on supporting talent through custom initiatives such as the STEM Teacher Training Intern programme, Executive Education Scholarships, and our Mentoring Programme. See video below.
Supporting Balance for Better Business – Second Report December 2019
The Balance for Better Business group has launched its second report, updating on progress against gender balance targets set out for Boards of Listed Companies in May of this year. Across the ISEQ 20 companies progress has been positive and the gap between Ireland and the EU equivalent has narrowed on foot of this progress. However, progress outside of the ISEQ 20 has been limited and for some listed companies has remain unchanged.
This second report has extended the review to now include targets for senior management teams. In addition, the scope of the review has also been widened to include gender balance targets at board and senior management levels for Private Companies.
The 30% Club Ireland has long been campaigning for such measures and has always focused on gender balance at senior decision making levels across all organisations operating in Ireland . We welcome the latest version of the Balance for Better Business review and, in particular, we are very pleased that the review has:
- Continued to recognise the importance of organisations being accountable for their own progress, in the recommendation for targets rather than prescribed quotas
- Highlighted progress against targets by the ISEQ 20 firms to 25.3%, and improvement of gender balance across all Irish Listed companies to 19.1%
- Expanded the focus to include private companies, which are a key sector of the Irish economy
- Broadened the focus to include senior executive teams, particularly as the c-suite is the talent pipeline for CEO and Board positions.
- Outlined the need for practical tools and supports and called out groups such as the 30% Club and initiatives like our Board and Executive Resourcing Code which we launched in April, as useful for progress
The 30% Club Ireland continues to support members as they put plans in place to deliver on the review recommendations.
For more information on the Review and how we plan to support organisations in delivering on the requirements, contact Gillian Harford, Country Executive 30% Club Ireland. gillian@gharford.ie

At the annual CEO and Chairs Conference on 8 February 2019: the Irish Chapter were very privileged to announce that Professor Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland, and Dr Martin McAleese, Chancellor, Dublin City University, have become joint patrons of the 30% Club in Ireland.. Speaking at the conference the former President said;
“Martin and I have always worked as a partnership and supported each other throughout our careers. Becoming patrons of the 30% Club to promote gender diversity is something we are both equally passionate about. Achieving real progress on gender diversity, is equally about men and women working together for change. Gender equality is a rising tide of talent, appreciation of all skill, and opportunity for all.”
Speaking about the announcement, Carol Andrews, 30% Club Ireland Country lead and a Managing Director at BNY Mellon Ireland said;
“The 30% Club Ireland is honoured to have Mary and Martin McAleese become our joint patrons. Their patronage illustrates clearly the standing the 30% Club now has in Irish life and embodies our view that improved gender representation is based on men and women working together for change. Their support is indicative of their combined passion and commitment to supporting diversity as an important means to achieve a better Ireland.”

30% Club Ireland Executive Education Scholarship Programme
The 30% Club Ireland is proud to be launching our Executive Education Scholarship Programme for its seventh consecutive year. Because of the support and generosity of higher level institutions across Ireland, the programme has provided over 80 professional women with scholarships to pursue executive education in their chosen field. We are proud of the accomplishment of all our alumni, and the vast impact they are making across the fields of Business, STEM, and Healthcare. These women are influencing the drive to achieve better gender balance on boards, and within executive leadership.
This year, we have 28 scholarships across Business, STEM, Healthcare and Public Policy, made available because of the generous support of our education partners across Ireland. To the next generation of scholarship recipients: You are about to make an empowering decision to expand your education. We welcome you into the 30% Club network, and we can’t wait to see what you achieve. We’re here to support you.

Since the pilot programme in 2015, 250 organisations have been through the IMI/ 30% Club Cross Company Mentoring Scheme. This cross-company, cross-sector mentor network brings together experienced leaders and mid-career high potential individuals focused on professional and personal development. At organisational level, participation on this programme leads to enhanced leadership capability within your talent pool.
Participation is at company level, with each participating organisation nominating at least 2 mentors and 2 mentees (one cohort), with at least 50% of your mentees being female. The mentor to mentee ratio is one-to-one and there must be equal numbers within each layer of the mentoring programme. Our recommendation is that mentors and mentees volunteer to take part in the programme and are then selected by their organisation based on internal criteria.
The programme runs in Dublin, Cork and Galway. You can find more information and register your interest here. IMI have dedicated Programme Managers who will be happy to answer any further queries you may have.

The Professional Services Firms’ Initiative was established in Ireland in 2015, to consider ways in which the group can support efforts towards increasing gender balance in law, accounting and consulting firms in the Irish market. The initiative is supported by the Managing Partners of Ireland’s leading professional services firms and is currently exploring next steps.

The Agrifood Diversity & Inclusion Forum was established in 2017 to promote diversity and inclusion in the Irish food and drink sector. Attracting, retaining and developing talent is one of the largest risks facing the food & drinks sector. This initiative aims to secure commercial success through the recognition that attracting the best talent depends on making current and future workers feel they are valued and that their contribution is recognised. The Forum is supported by Bord Bia and Aon and membership is made up of business leaders from the Irish food and drinks sector.

Established in 2016, the Financial Services Sub Committee of the 30% Club in Ireland has a clear purpose:
"To be a focused catalyst for meaningful change within the financial services industry, where the opportunity to develop and capitalise on a diverse talent pool can provide real positive commercial and competitive benefit to the sector primarily and ultimately to the Irish Economy and Irish Society."
To drive this purpose, in January 2017, the Sub Committee launched two key parallel initiatives:
1. Groundbreaking research providing a benchmark for female representation in Financial Services in Ireland - "Making the Change Count". Please click for link to report.
2. A toolkit of tips and resources to drive the actions which organisations can take to address the challenges highlighted in the report.
The toolkit has been designed to facilitate companies who are just starting out on their Diversity Journey, to those who are well-underway but need some help on drafting policies, to those who just want a centralised source of resources.
1.The toolkit is comprised of four elements. The first is a Strategy for Change document which sets out information about defining a Strategy, Mission and Goals, SWOT analysis and Measurements.
2.The second element is how to draft a Diversity and Inclusion policy with suggestions for inclusion and a sample template.
3.The third element is a Policy bank which will serve to act as a reference point for 30% members when forming their Diversity & Inclusion policies.
4.The final element is a Depository of resources including links to various websites.

In February 2017, IMI and the 30% Club conducted a focus group with over 50 women in senior leadership roles in Ireland. Based on the insights from this focus group and other global research, Taking the Lead is designed to give women executives an opportunity to come together and share their leadership experiences in a learning environment that has direct relevance and personal impact.
The programme will help you develop accelerators like purpose, empowerment and your personal brand whilst learning to address inhibitors like overwhelm, unconscious bias and power-play.
Taking the Lead will:
- Give you feedback on your leadership style.
- Help you develop or reinforce your vision and goals.
- Help you navigate your way in complex executive roles.
- Empower you to create real change in your career and industry.

What is Network 30
Network 30 is a forum where leaders of Womens/Gender Networks in 30% Club member organisations can come together to network, collaborate and share ideas on what they have done, what has worked well, and ideas for future plans
Why has it been established
As the focus on gender diversity has developed in Ireland we have seen growth in the number of organisations with gender networks where
Many organisational networks are well advanced, others are at the early stages of development and would like to learn more
Some networks are very Dublin centred; some are located in other specific cities and some organisations have the challenge of being multi site/multi geography – all of which can lead to great opportunities for cross organisation local events
Ultimately all networks are looking to add value, and it makes sense for us to learn from each other and share resources where there is a good fit
Where does it fit in the 30% Club Structure
Network 30 complements, and sits alongside the work of the 30% Club, the talent initiatives and the Industry Groups. Membership is for the gender network leads, so that gives access to another audience, and the agenda focuses on information sharing specific to gender networks, which brings additional topics to the table.

The Executive & Board Resourcing Code April 2019
A code of conduct for search professionals to adhere to in the placement of diverse talent across senior roles in organisations, with the support of business decision makers.
As organisations strive to achieve better performance through more diverse balance across senior decision-making roles, recruitment and appointments becomes a pivotal process. The Executive & Board Resourcing Code is designed to support search firms and organisations in more effective delivery of this process. The Code is based on four key principles incorporating Strategy & Goals, Talent Pipeline, Process and Monitoring & Reporting. The Code also recognises the importance of search firms and client organisations working together in partnership on delivering change. It is anticipated that the Code will become a referral point for the Balance for Better Business outputs, to be announced soon by the Government Review Group.
How the Code is applied
Executive search firms and search professionals, as signatories to the Code, commit to following the Code’s provisions in their board and senior executive search processes, irrespective of sector or company; and to ensuring that the principles and key behaviours are embedded in their day to day practices. A list of signatories is published, and signatories are also encouraged to publicise their compliance through their website and through public reporting of measures of success.
Individual organisations are actively encouraged to support the principles set out in the Code and to work in collaboration with the executive search partner, whether in-house or external, in ensuring the Code is upheld; and that ultimately greater balance is achieved across senior decision-making functions with particular emphasis at board and c-suite executive levels. In particular, it is anticipated that Nomination Committees will encourage the adoption of the principles and the suggested behaviours in both Board and internal selection processes, supported by the CEO and the HRD.
The 30% Club and Ibec have committed to promoting the Code and its signatories with our members, encouraging them to engage in future with recruitment and executive search firms who are as committed to diversity as they are. By working together, we hope that we can make further advances to address the challenge of gender balance in decision-making roles and ultimately for better business outcomes.
